Museum Overview
The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS) is a nonprofit railroad preservation organization headquartered in New Haven, Indiana. Founded in 1972, it is dedicated to preserving railroad history through the restoration, maintenance, and operation of historic railroad equipment while educating the public about the importance of rail transportation.
Railroad preservation helps future generations understand how rail transportation shaped communities, supported industry, and connected cities across the country. Historic locomotives and railroad equipment also provide opportunities to learn about locomotive design, railroad operations, and the people whose work kept the rail network moving.
For railfans and photographers, historic railroad equipment can offer interesting subjects, from locomotive details to the design features that distinguish older equipment from modern trains. Preservation organizations help keep this part of transportation history visible and accessible to the public.

History
The society was originally established to preserve Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive No. 765, a 2-8-4 Berkshire built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1944.
Following its retirement, the locomotive was placed on public display in Fort Wayne’s Lawton Park in 1963. After years of exposure to the elements, railroad enthusiasts organized an effort to restore the locomotive.
In 1974, No. 765 was moved to New Haven for restoration. On September 1, 1979, the locomotive returned to operation under its own power, marking a major achievement in volunteer railroad preservation.
Railroad Preservation and Excursions
Today, the society maintains a collection of historic locomotives, passenger cars, and other railroad equipment. Its preservation activities include mechanical restoration, maintenance, educational programs, and public exhibitions.
The society also operates the Indiana Rail Experience in partnership with the Indiana Northeastern Railroad. This program provides passenger excursions aboard historic railroad equipment, allowing visitors to experience rail travel from an earlier era.
Importance to Northeast Indiana
The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has helped preserve an important part of the region’s transportation history. Its restoration facility in New Haven supports ongoing preservation projects, while its excursions and educational activities introduce new generations to railroad history.
