A Visit to the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum – Gallipolis, Ohio

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, I had the opportunity to visit the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum in Gallipolis, Ohio, a wonderful location dedicated to preserving the rich railroad history of the Ohio River Valley.

The museum is located in the historic 1901 Hocking Valley Railroad Freight Station, a building that has witnessed several eras of railroad history, including the Hocking Valley Railroad, Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O), Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O), and Chessie System.

During my visit, I spent approximately two of the three hours the museum was open that Sunday exploring the exhibits and learning about the history preserved inside this historic freight station. Even after spending two hours inside, there were still many railroad artifacts, displays, and pieces of history that I did not have enough time to fully explore. Visitors should plan to allow plenty of time to appreciate everything this museum has to offer.

The visit was made even more enjoyable thanks to the guided tour provided by Jerry Davis.

Jerry was an outstanding guide who was both knowledgeable and friendly. His understanding of railroad history, the freight station, and the equipment on display was impressive. He shared detailed information about the various pieces of railroad equipment, their purpose, and how they fit into the larger story of railroading in the region.

One of the highlights of the visit was seeing how much work has gone into preserving this historic station. Jerry showed me a photograph of the freight station before restoration, and comparing that image to the beautifully restored building visitors see today was remarkable. The volunteers and supporters of the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum have done a fantastic job bringing this historic railroad structure back to life and preserving it for future generations.

Another highlight of the visit was seeing the fireless steam locomotive on display. These unique locomotives were commonly used in industrial settings where steam could be supplied from a stationary boiler. Instead of carrying their own fire and boiler fuel, they stored pressurized steam in a large tank and were used for tasks such as switching railroad cars within industrial facilities. Seeing this unusual piece of railroad equipment up close was a memorable experience and added another fascinating chapter to the museum’s collection.

The museum features an extensive collection of railroad artifacts, photographs, memorabilia, and displays that highlight the people, equipment, and railroads that helped shape the region. It is a great destination for railfans, railroad historians, and anyone interested in local history.

If you are traveling through southeastern Ohio, the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum is well worth a stop. I highly recommend taking the guided tour and spending time learning about this important piece of railroad history from the dedicated volunteers who help preserve it.

Although I am based in Northeastern Indiana, my visit to the Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum came while I was in the area visiting my sister in Scott Depot, West Virginia. The museum was well worth the trip, and I highly recommend making time to visit if you are traveling through southeastern Ohio.

Their passion for preserving the history of the railroads that served Gallipolis is evident throughout the museum and made this visit one that I will not soon forget.
